Guide

How to merge PDF files

  1. Add your PDFs. Select Choose PDF Files, or drag files onto the drop area. You can select several files at once.
  2. Add more if needed. + Add More PDFs appends files to the end of the list.
  3. Set the order. Files are merged from top to bottom. Use the up and down arrows to move a file, or the × button to remove it. Clear All empties the list.
  4. Merge. Select Merge PDFs. The button becomes available once at least two files are listed.
  5. Download. Select Download Merged PDF to save the result as merged-pdf.pdf, then rename it if you like.

What the tool does, and what it doesn’t

  • Every page of every file is copied into one new document, in the order shown. Pages aren’t re-compressed, so text and images keep their original quality.
  • Only PDF files are accepted; other file types are skipped with a message.
  • Password-protected (encrypted) or damaged PDFs can’t be opened. Remove the password with software you trust, or re-save the file as a new PDF, then try again.
  • Bookmarks and fillable form fields from the original files may not carry over to the merged file, so check the result if you rely on them.
  • There’s no fixed limit on the number or size of files, but everything is processed in your device’s memory. Very large files can be slow, especially on phones.
  • The tool merges whole files. It doesn’t split, rotate or delete individual pages, and it doesn’t compress PDFs. Your original files are not changed.

When merging PDFs is useful

  • Combining a month of invoices or receipts into one file for your bookkeeping.
  • Joining a cover letter, CV and certificates into a single application document.
  • Putting pages from a phone scanning app back into one document.
  • Adding an appendix or a signed form to the end of a report.

Example: add invoice-july.pdf (2 pages) and invoice-august.pdf (3 pages), keep July at the top and merge. The downloaded file has 5 pages: July’s two pages followed by August’s three.

What happens to your files

Your PDFs are read by your browser and merged in memory using pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library that runs on the page. The merged file is created on your device and saved through your browser’s normal download. Your files are not uploaded to our server, and we never receive, see or store them. Closing or refreshing the page clears them from the page’s memory.

The page only downloads its own code, libraries and fonts from the internet, never your documents. Our Privacy Policy lists those services.

PDF Merge FAQs

What is a PDF merge tool?

It combines two or more separate PDF files into a single PDF document, keeping every page in the order you choose.

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. Merging happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are never sent to our server.

Can I change the order of the files?

Yes. Use the up and down arrows next to each file before merging. The file at the top comes first in the merged document.

How many files can I merge?

As many as your device can handle. There is no set limit, but very large or numerous files need more memory and take longer.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current mobile browsers such as Chrome and Safari. Choose files from your phone’s storage or Files app; large files may take longer than on a computer.

Why couldn’t one of my files be processed?

The file may be password-protected, damaged, or not really a PDF. Open it in a PDF viewer, save or export it as a new PDF, and try again.

Is the PDF Merge tool free?

Yes, completely free with no account and no watermark.
