What is an age calculator?
An age calculator works out how much time has passed between a date of birth and another date, usually today. Instead of a rough number of years, it gives an exact answer in years, months and days, such as 34 years, 2 months and 9 days. It is handy whenever an exact age matters: filling in forms, checking eligibility rules, planning a milestone birthday or simply satisfying curiosity.
How to calculate your exact age
- Enter your date of birth using the date picker or by typing it.
- Check the “as of” date. It is set to today. Change it if you want to know an age on another day, past or future. Today puts it back to today’s date.
- Select Calculate Age. Your exact age appears straight away, followed by your next birthday and extra statistics.
- Reset clears the form so you can start again.
How the age calculator works
The calculator counts whole calendar units, the same way you would on a calendar. First it finds how many complete months have passed since your date of birth, then turns every 12 months into a year. The days left over are counted as real days from the last “month-iversary” to the “as of” date.
When a month does not have the day you were born on, the last day of that month is used. For example, someone born on January 31 completes one month on February 28 (or February 29 in a leap year), because February has no 31st. The same rule covers birthdays on the 29th, 30th and 31st of any month.
All the arithmetic is done on the calendar dates themselves, not on clock times, so time zones and daylight-saving changes cannot shift the result by a day. The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar, the calendar in everyday use today, for every date from year 1 to 9999.
Exact and approximate figures
- Exact: your age in years, months and days, total months, total weeks and total days. Total days is the number of days from your date of birth to the “as of” date; on the day you are born it is 0.
- Approximate: total years as a decimal (for example 34.19). Years have different lengths, so the decimal part spreads the days since your last birthday across the length of your current birthday year. It is a useful guide, but the years, months and days figure is the precise answer.
Why age is given in years, months and days
Months are 28 to 31 days long and years are 365 or 366 days long, so dividing a number of days by 365 drifts away from the calendar over time. Someone who has lived 10,000 days, for instance, is not simply “27.4 years” old in any precise sense. Counting complete years, then complete months, then the remaining days matches how birthdays actually work, and it is the form most forms and official documents expect.
How leap years affect age calculations
A leap year has 366 days, with February 29 as the extra day. Leap years happen every four years, except century years that are not divisible by 400: 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not and 2100 will not be. Because the calculator works with real calendar dates, every leap day between your date of birth and the “as of” date is counted in the total days and weeks automatically.
Born on February 29?
If your birthday is February 29, it only appears on the calendar in leap years. In other years, this calculator counts your birthday on February 28, the last day of your birth month. That means you complete each new year of age on February 28 in common years and on February 29 in leap years, and the “Next birthday” section tells you when February 28 is being used. Some laws and organizations use March 1 instead, so if an exact legal age matters, check the rule that applies to you.
How to calculate the age between two dates
The “as of” date does not have to be today. Put the earlier date in Date of birth and the later date in Calculate age as of, and the result shows the time between them in years, months and days, plus totals in months, weeks and days. You can use it for the age of a company, the length of a tenancy or how old someone was on a particular day. If the second date is earlier than the first, the calculator asks you to correct it instead of showing a negative age.
Example: from March 15, 1990 to October 2, 2026 is 36 years, 6 months and 17 days, which is 438 months and 17 days, 1,907 weeks and 1 day, or 13,350 days in total.
Common uses of an age calculator
- Checking whether you meet a minimum or maximum age for a job, exam, visa, sports category or school year.
- Finding your exact age for an application form that asks for years and months.
- Seeing how old you were on a past date, or how old you will be on a future one, such as a wedding or a retirement date.
- Counting down the days to your next birthday or a milestone birthday.
- Working out the age of a child in months, which is how early development is often tracked.
Good to know: results are a calendar calculation. If an age decides something official, such as a legal right or a benefit, follow the rules of the organization involved; some count a birthday from a specific time of day or treat February 29 differently.

Age Calculator FAQs
How does the age calculator work?
It counts the complete calendar months between your date of birth and the “as of” date, turns each 12 months into a year, and counts the remaining days. If a month has no matching day (for example the 31st), the last day of that month is used.
Can I calculate my exact age in years, months and days?
Yes. That is the main result, shown as separate years, months and days and as a sentence such as “You are 25 years, 4 months, 12 days old.”
Can I calculate my age on a past date?
Yes. Change Calculate age as of to any date on or after your date of birth to see how old you were that day.
Can I calculate my age on a future date?
Yes. Choose a future “as of” date and the result shows how old you will be then, along with the birthday that follows it.
How does the calculator handle leap years?
It uses real calendar dates, so February 29 is counted in every leap year (including 2000, but not 1900 or 2100). Total days and weeks include every leap day in the period.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
In years without a February 29, your birthday is counted on February 28. The Next Birthday section says so whenever February 28 is used. Some legal systems use March 1 instead.
Can I calculate the age between two dates?
Yes. Enter the earlier date as the date of birth and the later date as the “as of” date. The result is the exact time between the two dates.
Does SmartToolNexa store my date of birth?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your dates are not uploaded, stored or used for analytics.
Is the age calculator free?
Yes, it is free to use with no account and no limit on how many calculations you do.
